What is Farina and How do You Cook It?

Updated: 7 days ago

What is Farina?

Historically, Farina was the first genuine flour before milling stones. Named after the Latin word for meal, flour or spelt (a type of ancient wheat) Farina is a mild-tasting fine granular meal made from wheat that when cooked in boiling liquid is used to make a hot breakfast cereal and can also be cooked like polenta. Popularly sold as "Cream of Wheat™," farina is made from the endosperm of the grain, which is milled to a fine-grained consistency and then sifted. The bran and most of the germ are removed and then it is enriched with B vitamins and iron.

How do you cook Farina?

Here are the basic directions for making Farina porridge as well as a more gourmet recipe for Chocolate Chunk Coconut Porridge.

Farina Porridge

1 cup Specialty Grains Organic Farina

4 cups Water

1/8 tsp. salt

Directions: In a 1 ½ quart pot, bring water and a pinch of salt to a near boil. Remove from heat. Add Specialty Grains Organic Farina cereal slowly, stirring constantly. Return to burner and bring to a boil, then lower heat and cook approximately 3 minutes or until thickened, stirring constantly. Serve warm with your choice of toppings.
